The basics

What is qStack?

A free court rotation board for open play. You say how many courts there are, add the players, and it works out who plays next, keeps the line fair and keeps score. Everyone in the room can follow it on their own phone.

Is it free?

Yes. There is no plan to pay for and nothing to download. It runs in the browser, and you can add it to your home screen if you want it a tap away.

Do I need an account to host?

No. The board lives on the phone that started it. Log in when you want your boards saved, so they follow you to any device and your past sessions are kept.

Do players need an account?

No. They scan the code or open the link and the board is there. Signing in only matters if you want your games kept on your record from one session to the next.

What happens when somebody turns up late?

In Round Robin, the mode a new board starts in, they join the back of the line and wait their turn like anyone else. That is rarely the long wait it sounds like: courts are filled with faces nobody has played yet, and somebody who has just walked in is the freshest face in the room. Auto-Balanced goes further again and seats whoever is owed the most games, which catches a latecomer up quickly at the cost of them playing several in a row.

Can two people play as a fixed pair?

Yes. Lock them together and they stay on the same side of the net all session, while everyone else keeps rotating around them.

Can somebody help me run it?

Send them a co-host link. They get the same controls on their own phone, without your device and without your password.

What if I close the tab?

The board saves as it goes. Open it again on the same phone and it is where you left it. Sign in and it follows you to any device.

Does it work for badminton and tennis?

Yes. It is doubles rotation across however many courts you have, so any sport played four to a court works the same way. Skill separated is the exception, since it sorts on DUPR ratings.

Running a session

How many courts can one board run?

From one to six, in singles or doubles. Running more courts than that, or several divisions? Start a board for each. You can switch between them from the board title.

Do games start on their own?

Not on a new board. Each court shows who is up next and you tap Start match, which is also your chance to change the teams. Turn on Start matches automatically in Queue settings and courts fill the moment enough players are free.

Can I change the matching style halfway through?

Yes, from Queue settings. The change takes effect on the next court that frees up, and games already on court carry on. Court count, self-join and recording results can all be changed mid-session too.

Somebody has to leave early. Do I remove them?

Sit them out instead. They come out of the line but keep their games in the standings. Remove is only offered for someone who has not played yet, because removing a player who has would take their games out of the table.

I tapped the wrong winner. Can I fix it?

Yes. In Results, tap the pencil on that game, pick the side that actually won, and swap players between sides if they changed partners. Everyone keeps their game and their place in line.

Does it need a good connection?

No. Every tap lands on the board straight away and is kept on the phone until it can be sent, so a gym with bad signal is fine. A board the phone has opened before opens again with no internet at all.

Can I show the board on a TV?

Yes, with Courtside. Tap Courtside at the top of the board (on a phone, Show it on a TV in the share sheet), or type the board's address with /tv on the end into the TV's browser, then press F or tap Full screen. It shows every court, who is up next, the line and a QR code to join, in names big enough to read across the hall. It has no host controls, so it is safe on a screen everyone can reach.

Can qStack call out the names?

Yes, two ways. On Courtside, move the mouse or press a key to bring up the controls at the bottom and switch Sound on (it chimes and says "Sound on" so you know the speakers work). Each time a game starts, the TV chimes and then reads out the court and the four names, like "Court 2: Ana and Marco, versus Bea and Paolo." To call one again, tap Call again (or press C) for the last game, or tap any court on the TV for that one. No TV? On your own board, tap the speaker button at the top (Call games on a laptop) and your phone reads out each game as it starts, which works well through a Bluetooth speaker. You can also tap Announce on any court, or on a group in Up next to tell them to get ready. It uses the device's built-in voice, so how it says a name depends on the TV or phone.

Can one TV show more than one board?

Yes, up to four side by side. With two or more boards running, open the board switcher or the start page and choose Show both on one TV (or Show all 3 on one TV, and so on). Each board keeps its own courts, line and QR code.

Can I post a message for everyone?

Yes. Write it under Message to the room in Queue settings, or pick a ready-made one like Water break, back in 5. It shows at the top of every board and scrolls across Courtside until you take it down.

Can games have a time limit?

Yes. Pick one under Game time limit in Queue settings. Every court counts down, turns amber near the end and red once it is over, on the board and on Courtside. Nothing ends a game by itself; you still record the result.

Can qStack keep track of who has paid?

Yes. Set the fee under Fee in Queue settings, and add your GCash, Maya or bank QR from a screenshot of it. Any QR Ph code works, so a Receive money QR from BPI, BDO, UnionBank or any other bank is fine. Players see how to pay on their board and Courtside shows the QR. Tap Unpaid beside a name in the line as each person pays. Only you see who has not paid.

We run the same open play every week. Do I set it up again?

No. Tap Run it again at the end of last week's board, or on that session from the start page. The courts, the style and the names come back, and you tick off who turned up.

Can our open play show on our Courtogo venue page?

Yes, if you own or manage the venue on Courtogo. Sign in, then pick the venue at the bottom of Queue settings. While the board is running, the venue's page says open play is on now and links to it.

What does locking the phone do?

It lets you pass your phone around safely. Locked, anyone can record who won, start the next game, switch partners and sit a player out, but swapping players, changing the line and the settings ask for a 4 to 8 digit passcode first. The lock covers every board on that phone and no other phone.

For players

How do I join a board?

Scan the QR code the host is showing, or enter the six-character code on qstack.courtogo.com. Tap Join this queue, type your name, and you are at the back of the line. If the host is adding everyone themselves, the board says so and the link is watch-only.

Why does Up next say May change?

Up next is the board looking ahead, on your phone and on Courtside. Until a court frees up, a group marked May change can still change: someone sits out, a match runs long, or the host lines up a requested game. A group without it is set, so you can count on it.

Can my phone tell me when I am next?

Yes. On your board, tap Turn on beside Get a buzz when you're next and allow notifications. Your phone buzzes when your group is up next and again with the court number when your game goes on. On an iPhone, add qStack to your Home Screen and open it from there first, since iPhones only allow this for Home Screen apps.

How do I pay the host?

If the host has set a fee, your board shows it with How to pay. Tap it, save the QR, then in GCash, Maya or your bank app tap Scan and pick the saved picture. The host marks you as paid, and your board says so.

Can I share how I did?

Yes. Once the session ends, tap Your recap on the board for a card with your record, best streak, time on court and favourite partner, ready for your story or the group chat.

Can I see my own record?

Tap your name in the standings for your games, who you played with and against, and how you did. Sign in with Courtogo and every session you play is kept on your qStack Record.

After the session

What happens to a board nobody ends?

It ends itself once it is a day old and has had no games for twelve hours. Nothing is deleted: the standings stay and the link still opens.

Can I delete a board?

Yes, once it has ended. The owner can delete it from Queue settings, which removes the players, the games and the standings for good. Your saved players stay.

I used qStack on courtogo.com/queue. Where did my boards go?

They moved with you. The first time you open an old link, the boards this phone was running come along to qstack.courtogo.com, still with you as host. Boards saved to your account are there as soon as you sign in.

Is my qStack account the same as my Courtogo account?

Yes. qStack is made by Courtogo, and signing in to one signs you in to the other.

The quickest way to learn it is to run one.
